A Dog Owner Rigged His Door So That It Unlocks With a Bark

For everyone in the world whose heart has not blackened and shriveled beyond repair, nothing boosts your mood quite like a new family addition in the form of a dog. That is, until you have to wake up at the crack of dawn to let that needy, opposable-thumbless mutt out. But new dog owner and Raspberry Pi enthusiast David Hunt has rigged himself up a highly creative solution: a door that automatically unlocks at your dog's bark?or as he's dubbed it, Pi-Rex.

Winklevoss Bitcoin Trust ETF - Business Insider

Cameron (L) and Tyler Winklevoss, co-founders of ConnectU Inc., leave the U.S. District Court in Boston, Massachusetts July 25, 2007 following a court hearing on ConnectU's lawsuit against Facebook Inc.

Bitcoin, the obscure digital crypto-currency, has been out of the headlines for a little while.

But this hasn't stopped Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss from moving forward with their effort to make it more mainstream.

According to a new filing with the SEC, a trust sponsored by Winklevoss Capital Management has registered to offer shares that will give buyers exposure to Bitcoin.

"The Trust holds ?Bitcoins,? a digital commodity based on an open source cryptographic protocol existing on the online, end-user-to-end-user network hosting the public transaction ledger, known as the ?Blockchain,? and the source code comprising the basis for the cryptographic and algorithmic protocols governing the issuance of and transactions in Bitcoins," reads the filing.

"The investment objective of the Trust is for the Shares to reflect the performance of a weighted average price of Bitcoins, less the Trust?s expenses. The Sponsor believes that, for many investors, the Shares will represent a cost-effective and convenient means to access exposure to Bitcoins."

It appears that this will operate like an exchange-traded fund (ETF), a security that basically trades like a stock.

The ticker symbol for the fund has yet to be determined.

The Winklevosses became famous when they sued Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg for allegedly taking an idea that was theirs.

Before you even consider trading Bitcoin, you should consider the risks. Like this one from the filing:

If a malicious actor or botnet obtains control in excess of 50 percent of the processing power active on the Bitcoin Network, such actor or botnet could manipulate the source code of the Bitcoin Network or the Blockchain in a manner that adversely affects an investment in the Shares or the ability of the Trust to operate.

If this is incomprehensible to you, then maybe Winklevoss Bitcoin Trust isn't for you.

Read the whole filing at SEC.gov.

Obama, Bush heading to the same African city

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (AP) ? President Barack Obama and former President George W. Bush are planning to be in the same city a world away from home, but the question is whether they will get together.

The Democratic president was to fly Monday into Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the last stop on a weeklong tour of Africa that wraps up Tuesday. His Republican predecessor coincidentally also plans to be there for a conference on African women organized by the George W. Bush Institute.

Their wives plan to team up at the conference Tuesday for a joint discussion on promoting women's education, health and economic empowerment. President Bush plans to be in attendance, before delivering his own speech there the following day, after the Obamas will have left.

Initially aides said the men had no plans to meet, but Obama foreign policy adviser Ben Rhodes indicated Sunday that could change. "There may be something," Rhodes said.

Having both presidents in town "sends a very positive message that both political parties in the United States share a commitment to this continent," Rhodes said.

During his African visit, Obama has credited Bush with helping save millions of lives by creating the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.

"The United States has really done wonderful work through the PEPFAR program, started under my predecessor, President Bush, and continued through our administration," Obama said Sunday during a visit to the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation Youth Center in Cape Town.

Bush's accomplishment in fighting AIDS was one of his signature foreign policy successes, while Obama has not been so focused on Africa despite his roots there and only now is making a major presidential trip to sub-Saharan Africa. Obama's only previous visit as president was a brief visit to Ghana his first summer in office, although he traveled to Africa several times previously and has vowed to come back.

Obama told reporters earlier in the trip that finances and politics play a role in preventing him from doing more.

"Given the budget constraints, for us to try to get the kind of money that President Bush was able to get out of the Republican House for massively scaled new foreign aid programs is very difficult," Obama said. "We could do even more with more resources. But if we're working smarter, the amount of good that we can bring about over the next decade is tremendous."

Any visit with Bush would have to fit into a busy schedule for Obama.

He arrives in Tanzania Monday afternoon and heads for a meeting with President Jakaya Kikwete. Obama plans to meet later with business leaders from the U.S. and Africa to talk about increasing trade in east Africa, before ending the evening with a dinner hosted by Kikwete.

On Tuesday, Obama plans a private greeting at the U.S. embassy, and then a quick stop at the memorial on the grounds of the former embassy that was bombed nearly 15 years ago, killing 11 people. The president then delivers a final speech focused on bringing more electric power to Africa and heads back toward Washington by noon.

Grill of Honor: Lowe?s Thanks Troops with Charity Grill-Off and $100,000 Donation to USO

Carson Daly, Brooklyn Decker join those saluting military guests at 4th of July celebration

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Lowe?s and the USO treated hundreds of servicemen and women and their families to an all-American event headlined by a charity grill-off today at Nationals Park to thank the U.S. armed forces and celebrate the Fourth of July. ?Grill Sergeants? from each branch of the military put their grilling skills to the test during the all-star grilling competition.

?Their generous donation also makes it possible for the USO to continue providing important programs and services to those who need us most. On this Fourth of July, we are grateful to Lowe?s for joining us as we show our troops that their service and sacrifice are appreciated.?

The winning Grill Sergeant, Lance Cpl. Noah Bratcher of the U.S. Marines and his wife Cassandra, created the best burger among six branch chefs who fired up their Master Forge grills. The Marines won bragging rights, and Lowe?s donated $100,000 to the USO on its behalf.

Chefs from the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, National Guard and Navy were given 40 minutes to turn a recipe with surprise ingredients into a burger worth saluting. Celebrities Carson Daly and Brooklyn Decker attended the event in support of the troops and served as judges alongside Elaine Rodgers, President and CEO, USO of Metropolitan Washington, and Tom Lamb, Lowe?s chief marketing officer. Each team won gift cards and a grilling prize package for participating in the event.

The invited guests cheered on their favorite military branch and then enjoyed a day at the ballpark. Military families participated in free activities, including movie-themed Build & Grow clinics, face painting, cornhole tournaments, behind-the-scenes tours of the ballpark, a picnic-style cookout and more.

Hi-res photography and b-roll from the event can be downloaded here and used for media purposes: http://a-1broadcast.com/project/usocelebritygrill.html#.

?Today, Lowe?s gave military families a chance to have a great time,? said USO President and CEO Sloan Gibson. ?Their generous donation also makes it possible for the USO to continue providing important programs and services to those who need us most. On this Fourth of July, we are grateful to Lowe?s for joining us as we show our troops that their service and sacrifice are appreciated.?

Lowe?s support of the U.S. armed forces spans more than 60 years. Founded in 1946 by World War II Army veteran Carl Buchan, Lowe?s is proud to be a military friendly employer and a longtime supporter of the USO. Lowe?s employs more than 16,000 military veterans.
