About that new BlackBerry 10 keyboard

If you're interested in smartphone tech, you've surely been peeking at CrackBerry checking out all the BlackBerry World coverage. It's OK, we've been checking it out, too. The folks over there are killing it with the coverage. What seems to have impressed people the most is the new on-screen keyboard we're seeing in BlackBerry 10 devices. It has awesome text prediction, uses gestures, and is a step in the right direction when compared to RIM's previous software keyboard options. Surepress. *shudder*
Well, it should look good, as well as look pretty familiar -- we're certain we've seen it before. I'll come right out and say it. RIM is using technology from SwiftKey in their new keyboard, if not in the physical layout, then at least in the prediction engine. Our scientific testing all but proves it, and yesterday's video confirms our suspicions. But it's a good thing. Of all the software keyboards out there, we think SwiftKey would be the one to use if given a choice. Tie it deep into the OS, and we imagine the fellows from England can work magic with it. Hit the break, and have a look for yourself. And be sure to keep an eye on CrackBerry to find out all there is to know about BlackBerry World 2012.

Accelerometer mic could change the way we look at cochlear implants
Hearing aids aren't the most discreet cybernetic creations, because the need for a clog-free microphone means that they generally need an external component. Engineers at the Universities of Utah and Ohio aim to change everything with a much smaller mic that uses an accelerometer to detect sound vibrations -- so it requires no opening and can be inserted right into the ear. The only exterior hardware is the charger -- worn exclusively at night. Clinical trials in living humans begin approximately three years from now, and if you're looking forward to using this new device, removal of the incus (or anvil bone) in the middle-ear must first take place to optimize effectiveness of the new implant. We never said it'd be pretty.

Avengers showing postponed after projectionist accidentally deletes the entire film
The hottest film of the year vanished in an instant
From our experiences in movie theaters, moviegoers don't typically notice the hard work of the projectionist. They remain secluded in a room where they facilitate the steady stream of light and sound which the rest of us enjoy. Of course, if the enigmatic figure behind scenes mistakenly erases an entire digital film while dozens of critics wait for their chance to glimpse it, he or she becomes much more noticeable. That's exactly what happened during a recent press screening of the?hotly-anticipated?Avengers flick, and while the emergency was averted within a couple of hours, the incident serves to highlight just how flimsy our digital data really is.
In the gradual migration from traditional film reels to digital projection technology, viewers benefit from sharper images, less distortion, and ? usually ? better reliability. Unfortunately for the as-of-yet unnamed projectionist who was poised to give a number of critics and other entertainment press their first glimpse at one of the year's most anticipated films, the?Avengers film file went out with the digital trash.
According to?multiple tweets by?various members of the film press, the problem was corrected after about two hours, thanks to a relatively quick download from a distribution source. Of course, had the film been a more traditional 35mm tape version, there would have been little chance of such an issue occurring. I guess that's the price we pay for living in?the future.
