Probe may cause issues for more than DHS official

(AP) ? An internal investigation of President Barack Obama's choice to be the No. 2 official at the Homeland Security Department has the potential to become a political headache for former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and the Democratic candidate for governor in Virginia.

The director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Alejandro Mayorkas, has been named a target in an investigation for his role in helping a company run by Clinton's brother to secure an international investor visa. Congressional officials briefed on the investigation said the visa was for a Chinese executive. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly release details of the inquiry.

The DHS Inspector General's Office outlined the investigation in an email to lawmakers earlier this week. In that email, the IG's office said, "At this point in our investigation, we do not have any findings of criminal misconduct."

According to the IG's email to lawmakers, the primary complaint against Mayorkas was that he helped a financing company run by Anthony Rodham win approval for an investor visa, even after the application was denied and an appeal was rejected.

The investigation does not appear to have any direct ties to Clinton's tenure as secretary of state. Nonetheless, any hint of scandal or even the most tangential connection to Clinton is likely to become fodder for Republican super PACs, which have sought to discredit her record while she maintains a lower profile with private speeches and work on a new book.

The former first lady and New York Democratic senator has not said whether she will run for president in 2016. But Republicans have made it clear that until Clinton does make a decision, every moment of her tenure in government will be scrutinized.

Across the Potomac River in Virginia, the inspector general's investigation already has become a weapon for Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli in his race against Democrat Terry McAuliffe.

McAuliffe is former chairman of GreenTech Automotive, a manufacturer of energy-efficient cars that received funding from Rodham's Gulf Coast Funds Management. The firm is one of hundreds of government-approved "regional centers" that pool investments from foreign nationals looking to invest in U.S. businesses or industries as part of the EB-5 visa program for foreign investors.

GreenTech was not mentioned in the inspector general's email to lawmakers. In a statement late Tuesday, the company said it was not aware of the investigation prior to the report Tuesday by The Associated Press and that the company had not been contacted by the inspector general's office.

Cuccinelli, Virginia's attorney general, has previously criticized McAuliffe for putting GreenTech's new electric-car plant in a Mississippi suburb of Memphis instead of Virginia when the Democrat served as chairman of the company. McAuliffe quietly left his role as the company's chairman after declaring his bid for governor in November 2012.

In a statement Tuesday, Cucinnelli said McAuliffe should answer questions about the EB-5 probe and his role at GreenTech.

Josh Schwerin, a McAuliffe spokesman, said the investigation does not involve McAuliffe "and we hope that it is completed in a timely matter."

In an emailed statement Tuesday, Gulf Coast Funds Management's general counsel, D. Simone Williams, said the company had not been aware of the investigation and was not aware of an investor visa application being denied.

Beyond those on a ballot or thinking of running for office, the existence of the inspector general's investigation is almost certain to impact Mayorkas' nomination for deputy Homeland Security secretary.

Were he to be confirmed, Mayorkas likely would at least temporarily lead the department until a permanent replacement is found for Secretary Janet Napolitano, who is set to leave in September and become president of the University of California system.

USCIS and DHS did not respond to requests for comment Tuesday. The White House referred questions to the IG's office, which said the investigation was in an early stage.

Mayorkas is scheduled to appear Thursday before the Senate Homeland Security Committee for a hearing on his nomination, but the top Republican on the panel is calling for the nomination to be put on hold until the IG's investigation is completed.

A Democratic committee staff member said the committee's chairman, Sen. Thomas Carper, D-Dela., was aware of the investigation and was looking into the case. Thursday's hearing remained on the committee's schedule.

Inner speech speaks volumes about the brain

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Whether you're reading the paper or thinking through your schedule for the day, chances are that you're hearing yourself speak even if you're not saying words out loud. This internal speech -- the monologue you "hear" inside your head -- is a ubiquitous but largely unexamined phenomenon. A new study published in Psychological Science looks at a possible brain mechanism that could explain how we hear this inner voice in the absence of actual sound.

Companies include: SandRidge Energy, Inc. (SD), Chesapeake Energy Corporation (CHK), Breitburn Energy Partners LP (BBEP) and many more.

In the following excerpt from the Oil & Gas Review 2013 Report, an expert analyst discusses the outlook for the sector for investors:

TWST: You mentioned a couple of names earlier. Is there anything you'd add in terms of your current recommendations on the trusts that you do cover?

Mr. Bellamy: We cover three royalty trusts right now, and like I said, we've dropped coverage of a number of trusts that frankly we just didn't want to recommend anymore. Right now we cover Pacific Coast Oil Trust, Whiting USA Trust II (WHZ) and Enduro Royalty Trust. Our favorite trust buy-and-hold for the long term - and what I would own personally if they let me eat my own cooking - is ROYT, and that's 98% oil production from the Santa Maria and Los Angeles Basin in California. We think it has a very good structure; it's a perpetual trust, it's linked to global crude prices. California tends to trade at North Sea Brent prices, which is a premium price versus interior U.S. prices like WTI.

And then longer term, we think that there's potential production upside from their exposure to the Orcutt diatomite. We have a $21 target on ROYT, which implies 30% potential to our target and 9% in total rate of return. We think that's attractive and really well-run. It's actually one of the few that's actively marketed by the folks that run it. The management team is the same folks who run BreitBurn Energy Partners (BBEP), and that's interesting because they are in the market every day and, incidentally while we are not talking about MLPs, today we do like the BreitBurn management team and BBEP as well.

We also have "outperform" ratings on...

Amid the devastation of one of the worst wildfires in U.S. history, which took the lives of 19 firefighters and destroyed dozens of homes, Larry and Patti McCracken experienced a tiny?miracle.

The married couple of 50 years now have Patti McCracken?s wedding ring back ? found by one of their daughters under a foot of charred rubble that used to be their dream retirement home in the small town of Yarnell, where the Arizona fires raged June?30.

Dealing with the sad reality that 19 men in the prime of their lives died trying to protect Yarnell and with the loss of the home they worked for their entire lives, the McCrackens returned to the ruins Monday with heavy hearts and little?hope.

Because they were on vacation, they didn?t get a chance to grab family photo albums, heirlooms ? and most precious of all, Patti?s wedding ring ? before the town was evacuated before the fire struck. Patti wasn?t in the habit of wearing the ring because it no longer?fit.

But one of the McCrackens? daughters, Bethany Hansom, made up her mind to find it, spending hours digging through sooty debris before nearly giving up and saying one last?prayer.

?Then I stuck my hand in the dirt and rolled over this big rock and there it was, plain as day,? Hansom, 36, who lives in a Phoenix suburb, said in a telephone interview?Friday.

Because her parents had been out picking up lunch for everyone when Hansom found the ring, she pulled her dad aside when he returned and told him he should be the one to give it back to his high school?sweetheart.

So Larry worked up the nerve to pop the question for the second time in his life, getting down on one knee as his entire family?watched.

?We hugged and we kissed and I said, ?Yes,? and I haven?t taken it off since,? said Patti, who now wears the ring on her pinkie finger. ?It was just such a profound?moment.?

The band was charred black, but three diamonds on the ring sparkled like?new.

?It wasn?t a very big diamond, but it certainly was a symbol of what we?ve had together for 50 years,? Patti?said.

The McCrackens, who will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in September, met in their hometown of Euclid, outside of Cleveland, in northeastern Ohio. A decade later, they fell in love with Arizona?s sunsets and mountains and moved to Phoenix, where they raised their three?children.

Patti, who turned 68 on Saturday, and Larry, 71, retired from their blue-collar jobs in January, sold their Phoenix-area house and moved permanently to their home in Yarnell, which until then was just a summer?home.

They were just settling into their retired lives and looking forward to some relaxation, gardening and time with the grandkids before the Yarnell Hill fire?hit.

Huntingdon, Que. mayor says he enjoys killing stray cats

After saying over the airwaves of a French-language radio station that he enjoyed killing stray cats, Huntingdon, Que. mayor St?phane Gendron once again landed himself in hot water.

"If a stray cat is in the street, BANG, I accelerate," he exclaimed while laughing on Radio X, where he moonlights as a shock-jock.

"The other day, I backed up over a one that had just come into the world. I'm sure it didn?t feel anything. I was very happy. Yes!" he continued.

Gendron called strays a public nuisance and continued to describe the sadistic ways he employs to get rid of them.

He issued an open letter on the website of CHOI, the radio station he works for, apologizing and saying the terms he used may have been inappropriate considering the subject. He also said that he meant the comments to be perceived with a tone of "black humour". However, he didn't deny his previous comments and didn't clarify whether the statements were true or false.

The mayor of the small town about 75 kilometres from Montreal has made controversial statements in the past, particularly anti-Israel ones made in Jan. 2012. It wasn't the first time the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council had to investigate Gendron's on-air comments ? it ruled he violated the broadcasting code of ethics in 2006 for comments he made related to a child pornography case.

The Montreal SPCA is investigating Gendron's most recent claims. Spokeswoman Alanna Devine said they haven't been able to speak to the Huntingdon mayor yet, though the SPCA is encouraging residents to call for his resignation.

"This is really very disturbing to hear," she said.

"Those comments and supposed acts coming from somebody ? from anybody, but particularly from someone who is a public figure and an elected official of a municipality."

The SPCA is asking people to lodge complaints with the CRTC and Radio X.

Gendron did not return CBC News reporters' request for interviews.

Can Big Data solve the mystery of suicide??

Durkheim Project

Facebook suicide

AP

Everywhere on the Internet, we're trailed by bots that inspect our searches and social chatter, attempting to predict what we're going to buy, watch or who we might date next. But in the middle of all that commerce-friendly jibber jabber, some people are saying, in not so many words, "I am going to kill myself." What if a computer program could spot those cries for help as well?

An ambitious new study is analyzing real-time data collected from Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts volunteered by veterans and active military personnel in order to develop a way to identify those who might be at risk of suicide. The Durkheim Project is a joint effort by predictive analytics firm Patterns and Predictions and the Veterans Education and Research Association of Northern New England, with support from Facebook and funding from DARPA, among others. By seeking linguistic cues from social media interaction, it may someday aid healthcare workers to identify and help patients before it's too late.

Men and women of the military are an all too rich source of research material. Everyday, 22 U.S. veterans take their own lives, an average of one every 65 minutes, according to a recent government report. In 2012, suicides among active members of the military reached 349, exceeding those killed on duty. Further, mental health experts say, the military culture makes those at risk less likely to ask for help or admit they need it.

Somewhere between the first thought of self-harm and the final act, Durkheim's project director Chris Poulin hopes to find "those subtle cues as they build up, but haven't become much of a problem that you can't change the fate," he told NBC News.

And it really is about subtlety.

"We do know factors that increase risk [of suicide], such as depression, but our best methods rely on individuals telling us," Dr. Craig J. Bryan, associate director of the National Center for Veterans Studies at the University of Utah and a Durkheim Project adviser, told NBC News. "A lot of people who die by suicide don't tell people they're thinking of it, so the difficulty is trying to figure out if there are other indicators that go around this problem of self report."

So to start with, suicidal patterns needed to be identified. Three groups were formed using 300 anonymous medical records from the Veterans Administration: patients who died of suicide, patients under psychiatric care and patients seeking medical treatment but not under any psychiatric care. From that trove of detailed doctors' notes, the project's computer scientists discovered the behavior unique to those patients who ended their lives.

Troubled relationships, debt, job loss, post-traumatic stress, health issues and alienation are common experiences for many United States veterans, as well as being risk factors suffered by many people who chose to take their own lives. But risk factors are not the same as warning signs ? which can be far less obvious.

According to Poulin, the project's consulting doctors who had treated veterans were surprised not at the common behaviors ? agitation, shame, self-hatred ? but that a computer program could detect often subtle clues from the medical reports.

It's not a simple matter of key words, either. While the results of this study won't be published for some time, and privacy prohibits discussion of the records themselves, the project's managers point out that the initial patterns are not explainable as words that simply cropped up while cross referencing text files. "The technology is trying to find the stories within the stories," said Gregory Peterson, a Durkheim Project spokesperson. "We look for certain kinds of language, and we analyze it."

Peterson said they can already identify certain clusters of language that do raise flags, for instance, those that surround notions such as loneliness or agitation. And when multiple clusters appear, there's greater concern. But "this is not some kind of scanning technology," Peterson told NBC News. "It's far more complicated."

In the new phase of the project, the foundation established by the initial 300 patient records will be tested against a much larger population of volunteers, with data coming from a variety of apps that will continuously upload the subjects' social media and mobile phone interactions. While there's no minimum number of participants, the project hopes to enlist up to 100,000.

The accumulated social information ? safeguarded by HIPAA standards of medical privacy and stored in the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth's secure onsite database ? is analyzed by computer programs developed during the earlier phase. None of the data is shared with third parties, and the information is objectively safer than any stored on Facebook, OKCupid or Edward Snowden's flash drive. Similar to many medical tests, this stage is only for observation. There will be no diagnosis or intervention, though participants are welcome to drop out of the study at any time.

What goes unsaid in the Durkheim Project press release is the cold hard fact not uncommon with drug tests for cancer or other potentially fatal diseases: To get optimum results, the researchers are waiting for people to die.

"It's not a happy topic. I don't think we should back away from it just because it's taboo or so stressful," Poulin said, adding that "there's no negative intent there, no creepy objective. This is the cost of doing business in life-or-death research."

The Durkheim project takes its name from French sociologist ?mile Durkheim. In 1897, Durkheim published a groundbreaking case study, "Suicide," in which he used diaries and notes of suicide victims to detect patterns, including social isolation. Similarly, Poulin's team strives to use Big Data to find words, phrases or behavior that can identify the warning signs that, within society, may even go unnoticed by the potential victim.

If those warning signs can be deciphered, it may be "possible to intervene with a narrative that is more positive, and basically changed the track of someone's life," Poulin said.

But that's a difficult proposition. Even outside the military population, doctors miss cues. A review of studies by the Mayo Clinic found approximately 44 percent of people who commit suicide visited their primary care physician, and 20 percent visited a mental health care worker in the month before their deaths.

As with people who have never served, when veterans take their lives, "there is no single reason," Bryan said, explaining that he and other researchers are learning that military service is increasingly stressful in a war that's gone on for 10 years. And once soldiers leave the military, "they return to a society that as a whole is less engaged. Many veterans don?t fit in with the rest of the society. Nobody knows what they've gone through, and they begin to feel marginalized. It's when marginalization occurs that suicide risk increases."

Poulin hopes the project will eventually open to volunteers outside the military community. Groups that deal with teens and cyberbullying have already expressed interest, he said.

Dr. Lisa Horowitz, a staff scientist and clinical psychologist at the National Institute of Mental Health, isn't affiliated with the Durkheim Project, but she told NBC News she sees value in the information shared on social media.

"Social media is probably very important, especially with young people who use it as their forum to reach out to their community," she said. Nevertheless, she said, there's a danger in attempting to apply a single protocol for different groups at risk.

"With youths, the way to access suicide is to ask them directly," Horowitz said, citing a study that found adolescents prefer direct questions. "The majority of suicides tend to be committed by older men, and they have a tendency to deny suicide if you ask them directly."

So what works for the military will likely not apply to civilians, but the research ? much like social media itself ? is still so new that the possibilities themselves are yet to be discovered. "Just because it's complicated and these different groups are so varied doesn't mean there's no solution," Horowitz said. "It just means we have to be careful not to create one prevention style that's meant to work for everybody."

Warning signs of suicide
The more of these signs a person shows, the greater the risk. Warning signs are associated with suicide but may not be what causes a suicide.

  • Looking for a way to kill oneself.
  • Talking about feeling hopeless or having no purpose.
  • Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain.
  • Talking about being a burden to others.
  • Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs.
  • Acting anxious, agitated or recklessly.
  • Sleeping too little or too much.
  • Withdrawing or feeling isolated.
  • Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge.
  • Displaying extreme mood swings.

What to do if someone you know exhibits warning signs of suicide

  • Do not leave the person alone.
  • Remove any firearms, alcohol, drugs or sharp objects that could be used in a suicide attempt.
  • Call the U.S. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255).
  • Take the person to an emergency room or seek help from a medical or mental health professional.

India`s 21st nuclear reactor at Kudankulam starts fission

India`s 21st nuclear reactor at Kudankulam starts fission Chennai: The much awaited event for the Indian nuclear establishment, the first unit at Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) and India's 21st reactor, began the nuclear fission process Saturday night, officials of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) said.

"At 23.05, the first reactor attained criticality and all the parameters are normal," a jubilant R.S.Sundar, site director of KNPP, told IANS over phone.

According to him, sustained nuclear reaction has been achieved and all parameters are as per expectations.

"After a long time, the mood here is good," he added.

Top officials of the Indian nuclear establishment, including RK Sinha, chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) and secretary, department of atomic energy (DAE), and KC Purohit, chairman and managing director of NPCIL among others, are at Kudankulam to see the first of the two Russian-made units attain criticality in a smooth manner.

India`s 21st nuclear reactor at Kudankulam starts fission

Earlier speaking to IANS, Purohit said the process towards criticality was proceeding smoothly as per the procedure laid down.

India's atomic power plant operator, NPCIL is setting up two 1,000 MW reactors with Russian technology and equipments at Kudankulam, around 650 km from Chennai.

The over Rs 17,000 crore project, which generated severe protests from the locals, has started generating heat and steam from the 163 uranium fuel bundles loaded in the reactor.

The reactor was loaded with fuel assemblies containing about 80 tonnes of uranium oxide. On July 11 night, armed with the AERB's clearance, the KNPP started its journey towards attaining criticality.

According to officials, several low power tests will be carried out in order to verify the conformance of the reactor characteristics to design objectives.

If the reports are satisfactory, then the AERB will give its clearance for the next stage, which is phase-wise increase in reactor power level.

India`s 21st nuclear reactor at Kudankulam starts fission

At the first stage, the plant will be synchronised with the southern grid when power generation touches 400 MW. That is expected to happen in 30-45 days. After necessary regulatory clearances the power generation will be increased gradually to 50 percent, 75 percent, 90 percent and finally 100 percent.

When that happens, the total installed nuclear power capacity in the country will go up to 5,780 MW.

KNPP is India's first pressurised water reactor belonging to the light water reactor category.

While the power from KNPP will be shared by the southern states, the lion's share will be for the home state Tamil Nadu, which is suffering from power deficit.

"Tamil Nadu's share of the 1,000 MW will be 463 MW. As and when the power comes to our grid, it will certainly ease the power shortage to some extent," a senior official at Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Ltd (TANGEDCO) told IANS.

"The utility sources power from various central power generating units at varied rates but less than Rs 3 per unit whereas the power from KNPP will be over Rs 3 per unit," he added.

As for the second unit at KNPP, he said there will be time lag of around six/eight months, Sinha told IANS.

According to Sinha, it was matter of time before the general framework agreement is signed with the Russian suppliers for the third and fourth units.

It is learnt construction work for the administrative building for the next two units is progressing at KNPP site.

According to him, the total outlay for the third and fourth units would be Rs 40,000 crore.

"The issue of liability of the suppliers in the case of an accident is one of the reasons for the signing of the agreement getting delayed," Sinha said.

On the level of local content in the proposed two units, Sinha said it is for NPCIL and the Russian parties to decide and it would be covered in the general framework agreement.

The KNPP is an outcome of the inter-governmental agreement between India and the erstwhile Soviet Union in 1988. However, construction began only in 2001 but was delayed mainly due to non-sequential supplies of components from Russian vendors.

Fearing for their safety in the wake of the nuclear accident at Fukushima in Japan in 2011, villagers in the vicinity of the Kudankulam plant, under the banner of People's Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE), have been opposing the project.

City-based environmental activist G Sundarrajan had filed a case in the apex court demanding that the KNPP be scrapped. The court dismissed the case in May and laid down 15 directions for the NPCIL, the AERB, the union environment and forest ministry, the Tamil Nadu government and the state pollution control board to follow.

KNPP site director Sundar said the other nuclear power projects under construction are Kakrapar Atomic Power Project (2x700 MW), Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (2x700 MW) and the second unit at KNPP of 1,000 MW.

When all these come into play the total nuclear power capacity in the country will be 9,580 MW, he said.

Hypothyroidism, Health & Happiness ? The Perimenopause Blog

Post image for Hypothyroidism, Health & Happiness

Just when I thought it was safe to move onto another topic, one of my favorite go-to physicians for women?s health issues published another book on the subject of?hypothyroidism.?

Dr. Steven F. Hotze, MD, author of?Hormones, Health, and Happiness?(a book I?ve reviewed and cited often),and founder of the Hotze Health and Wellness Clinic in Houston, Texas, has published another book entitled:Hypothyroidism, Health & Happiness: The Riddle of Illness Revealed.

It was Dr. Hotze who first brought to my attention what has arguably become an American health epidemic: hypothyroidism. Though it?s not that I wasn?t aware that a lot of people (particularly women) suffer from hypothyroidism so much.

But, that the?testing procedures used to diagnose hypothyroidism, are woefully inadequate. It was Dr. Hotze who first pointed this out to me, and I?ve been highly intrigued ever since. Particularly since women going through perimenopause often suffer from hypothyroidism and either do not know it, or may suspect it but have been told that their blood work reveals ?normal? thyroid function.

I?m particularly excited over Dr. Hotze?s new book, because I?m hoping his research and due diligence regarding hypothyroidism in women will get more airplay. I know that periodically, certain physical illnesses and treatments become culturally vogue, i.e., ADHD in children, depression and bipolar (in?everybody)?and in some regard, even hormone issues for women.

As a result, we get saturated with information on said topics, and like humans often do, we tend to tune it out. I hope that people won?t tune this out. If for no other reason, that the testing controversy will?finally?get addressed.

In addition to Dr. Hotze?s new book release (which I heard about yesterday), I also ran across this article,?Hypothyroidism Symptoms & Solutions??by Loretta Lanphier, a naturopathic practitioner, clinical herbalist and nutritionist, and holistic health practitioner, who is also in the Houston, Texas area.

It is a rather long article, but extremely well-written and?definitely?worth your time to read. I was particularly struck by the long list of symptoms she cites in the article which are associated with hypothyroidism. It is, without question, the longest list of symptoms I?ve ever seen associated with any other condition. It?s staggering.

I will be receiving a complimentary copy of Dr. Hotze?s book in the very near future to review here and at The Perimenopause Blog. I?m eagerly anticipating it, given what I?ve learned thus far about?women in perimenopause and hypothyroidism.? So be sure and watch for that post in the very near future!

In the meantime, also be sure and?check out Loretta Lanphier?s article. It?s excellent!

Red HTC One now available in the UK

Red HTC One

'Glamor red' HTC One launches exclusively at Phones4u, available on contract

Right on schedule, the "glamor red" HTC One is now available to purchase from Phones4u in the UK. The retailer, which has exclusivity over the red HTC One in the UK, is offering the device on contracts from Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile and EE starting at £31 per month. Right now there's no way to pick the phone up off-contract online — although brick-and-mortar P4U stores are often more accommodating to SIM-free buyers.

The red HTC One is — you guessed it — the same aluminum-backed phone we know and love, only with a different and more eye-catching coat of paint. Unfortunately there's still no official info on any plans to launch the red variant outside of the UK.

Increase in Jobs in Real Estate Sector

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 12, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The latest data concerning mortgage jobs was sluggish and showed falling employment in the sector. However, employment expanded across all industries, which drove up already high rates.

Preliminary government data indicates that there were more than 292,000 people employed during May in the mortgage industry.

Similarly, roughly 293,000 people were employed in real estate finance, in which the jobs forecast increased from the previous month.

The data came from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and indicated that the industry had indeed expanded from the same time period last year when only 264,800 people were employed by the mortgage industry.

Several large companies cut jobs in the period between April and May. One of the largest sets of layoffs occurred at JPMorgan Chase & Company where 1,340 positions were eliminated in the second quarter. In Bellevue, Washington, the Legacy Group Lending Inc. laid off roughly 300 employees in May, and the Homeward Residential Inc. cut 185 jobs during the second quarter in Jacksonville, Florida.

Another industry that saw decreased growth was the real estate credit industry, in which 212,500 employees were reported. This was revised down from an estimated 213,100 in April, although it is doing much better than the same month in 2012, in which only 198,100 people were employed in this category.

In the category ?mortgage jobs,? 79,700 were classified as ?mortgage and non mortgage loan brokers,? which saw a 200 person decline when compared to the previous month. One division of the Department of Labor, the BLS, stated that U.S. unemployment was 7.6 in May and June.

Far more significant than the unemployment figures was the total nonfarm payroll employment, which increased by almost 200,000 in June.

The bond market was shocked by the jobs data and saw the price of the 10-year Treasury note plummet.

Idiot iPhone Thief Leaves His Samsung Galaxy at the Scene, Gets Caught

Idiot iPhone Thief Leaves His Samsung Galaxy at the Scene, Gets Caught

Irony's a bitch. Alleged iPhone thief Travis Montgomery Snyder knows first hand. His smash-and-grab plot to liberate a whole slew of iPhones from a Virginia retailer went of mostly without a hitch. Expect for the part where he left his own phone behind.

The robbery occurred back on February 19, when police were called to the scene of a local phone store, DMW Wireless, to find a broken display case and a bunch of missing Apple devices. But just inside the front door, under a pile of broken glass, was the unwitting(?) Samsung Galaxy trade-in.

It was pretty trivial to trace ownership back to Mr. Synder, who looks suspiciously similar to the forgetful thief caught on DMW's security cameras. Too bad he didn't stick with Android; then he wouldn't have to jailbreak. [The Washington Post]

Mario and Luigi: Dream Team review - The Worlds Best Video Game ...

"Deep within Luigi?s dreams, he?s no longer the timid gangly coward he?s usually shown to be"

The Mario and Luigi RPG series was borne from the ideal to bring Paper Mario, itself a throwover from the ideals of Super NES?s Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, to Nintendo?s handhelds. Progressive and delightfully daring, the series makes its debut on the 3DS with Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. After the frankly fantastic Bower?s Inside Story on the DS, developer AlphaDream has a lot to live up to with this sequel.

If you?re new to the series, what you can expect from Mario and Luigi is an expansive, humorous, exploration-heavy RPG with a unique and endlessly entertaining active turn-based combat system, with bits of platforming and puzzle-solving thrown in to keep you enthralled throughout. If you?re new to the series you might also enjoy the lengthy tutorial, but those that have played any of the previous games will find the unskippable lessons rather tedious.

mldt4

As a nice change (and par for the course for the series, really) the game doesn?t take place within the Mushroom Kingdom, nor does it begin with Bowser having kidnapped Princess Peach for the eleventy billionth time. Instead, our moustachioed heroes and the royal entourage are invited along to a neighbouring resort on? the Island of Pi?illo; once home to the Pi?illo folk, but now inhabited by all manner of creatures; block people, Yoshi?s and an assortment of expatriate Beanish.

That?s not to say, of course, that our most distressed damsel doesn?t end up abducted; It?s not too long before the matriarch of the Mushroom Kingdom is whisked away by the evil bat king Antasma and taken to the dream world. Naturally it?s up to our favourite plumbers to save the Princess ? but to do that, they?ll have to enter the dream world and free the ancient Pi?illo people trapped crystalline nightmare chunks.

mldt2

What makes Dream Team so ridiculously fun can hardly be credited to its story though; it all comes own to mechanics. Mario & Luigi: Dream Team dispenses with the time travel and babies from Partners in Time and says goodbye to Bowser and the world within him. Instead, the gimmick here is that we?re able to enter the dreamworld, which opens up an entire new world of fantasy and some particularly inventive ways of getting about.

Moving about and attacking things in the real world is exactly as it?s always been; Mario and Luigi move around in the overworld, each controlled with a different button; the crimson Mario jumps and attacks with the A button, while his more verdant, lankier brother hops and hits with B. Encounter and engage with an enemy on the map, and you?ll kick off an RPG-styled battle.

mldt5

Mario and Luigi attack using their traditional approaches of jumping on heads, using hammers, kicking shells, and eating mushrooms. They?re essentially normal attacks or combo attacks, or items from your standard RPG menu, but what makes the combat in Mario and Luigi games? so engaging is the demand for timing and precision. Enemy attacks can be countered or dodged, friendly attacks can be enhanced for more damage by timing button presses, and special attacks do ludicrous amounts of damage when timed properly.

It?s within the dreamworld, however, where things really begin to get interesting. Because it all takes place deep within Luigi?s dreams, he?s not the timid gangly coward he?s usually shown to be. Instead, he?s an idealised version of himself ; the Luigi he really wants to be ? The Mushroom Kingdom?s Tyler Durden. The Luigi within the dream world is uncreatively called the Dreamy Luigi, and he helps Mario in a number of ways. Firstly, battles with creatures within the dreamworld feature only Mario; he?s been imbued with dreamy Luigi power, and whenever Mario lands a jump, an army of Luigis follow suit. Do a Hammer Attack, and a bevy of Luigis join the attack. Instead of the regular Bro attacks, in the Dream world they?re replaced by a new type called ?Luiginary attacks? that range from ludicrous, to well, even more ludicrous. One such attack has Mario jumping on a ball of Luigis, that gather momentum by rolling over more incarnations of the fellow. Another has Mario jumping on stacks of Luigis, building a tower of the gangly green fellow. There?s a wealth of this sort of thing, but it would be a sin to spoil most of it.

mldt6

The dream version of Luigi also helps you traverse the dream world using ?Luiginary works,? which has you manipulating Luigi?s sleeping face on the lower half of the 3DS, tugging on his moustache, for example, to hurl Mario in to the distance, or scratching at his nose to make him sneeze, which causes monsoon-like winds in the ethereal realm. With this co-operative style constantly at play Mario and Luigi seldom feels repetitive, despite the trappings of regular RPG grinding fare, like level-ups and stat-buffing gear. It?s entertaining from start to finish, and at around 40 hours long, it a heck of a lot of entertainment.?

It?s a wonderful entry to the series for newcomers, but those who?ve played previous Mario and Luigi games will hate the tutorials, and the fact that it all feels perhaps a little too familiar. The dream world is a little dull compared to Bowser?s innards. The music, as expected, is wonderful but the humour is stretched a little thin, relying too much on sleep and Luigi puns. A number of old friends, like Starlow and Popple return as a bit of fan-service, and two particularly beefy HooHoo?s act as some of the only genuinely funny characters.

It might not quite hit the highs of Bowser?s Inside Story, but it?s still essential; yet another must-have title to the 3DS? ever-increasing library of incredible first party games.?

97% A Hijacking

All Critics (67) | Top Critics (19) | Fresh (65) | Rotten (2)

A Hijacking is one of those perfect films that crop up every few years to prove that with true artistry, even the most exhausted genre can yield something new, rich, and strange.

Lindholm justifies his confidence in a visual approach that's refreshingly realistic.

To refuse to call A Hijacking a thriller is not to say it isn't thrilling, in a dryly cerebral way.

It's the second feature from the young writer-director Tobias Lindholm, and it showcases his gift for tightly focused stories told without an ounce of fat.

Lindholm doesn't present the film as a procedural for hostage negotiations because he knows too well that there are too many movable parts, too many things that can go wrong.

Methodical and tense ... has the feel of something based on real-life events ... boils down to an arresting portrait of two men, with different backgrounds and abilities, doing everything they can not to break.

Tobias Lindholm's slow-burning thriller makes a bid for verisimilitude that extends well beyond the use of natural light and handheld cameras.

Though the acting in "A Hijacking" is superb, the film is strictly a "follow-the-dots" offering. This is not entertainment. It is another overwhelmingly depressing foray into corporate greed.

"A Hijacking", if eligible, is an early contender for Best Foreign film at the 2014 Academy Awards.

It's an effective piece of work that will leave you longing for a shower, a nap, and a warm meal.

It's a radical departure from any thriller in stateside theaters.

A nail-biter of the highest order, A Hijacking is astonishingly emotional, gritty, and terrifying -- a genuine directorial achievement that should not be missed.

When the gut-wrenching conclusion of A Hijacking comes in the form of a single, random act, it's only then you realize how far you've been pulled into its emotional core.

A Hijacking delivers all the thrills the title suggests, but in none of the places you'd expect them.

The danger never reaches the level of chaos, but the subtext and metaphor in the slow-moving humanistic commentary on the motivations and byproducts of capitalism make for an intriguing film.

A smart movie derived out of the small moments that collectively comprise the hostage experience, rather than grandiose gestures.

Lindholm's you-are-there docudrama works as a tense thriller, but themes of negotiation and the ability to empathize provide a rich subtext.

...slow, mostly talk, but tense and realistic...

The level of suspense in this riveting Danish thriller doesn't build in sweeping melodramatic fashion, but rather at a low-key simmer that emphasizes authentic character dynamics.

A Hijacking accomplishes a tricky task, generating tension through talk rather than action.

CARACAS ? A Venezuelan government minister on Wednesday urged citizens to shut Facebook accounts to avoid being unwitting informants for the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, referring to recent revelations about U.S. surveillance programs.

Edward Snowden, a former U.S. National Security Agency contractor, last month leaked details about American intelligence agencies obtaining information from popular websites including Facebook,? He is believed to be holed up in the transit zone of Moscow?s Sheremetyevo Airport from where he has applied for asylum in more than 20 countries in a bid to avoid extradition to the United States.

"Comrades: cancel your Facebook accounts, you've been working for free as CIA informants. Review the Snowden case!" wrote Prisons Minister Iris Varela on her Twitter account.

Venezuela has offered to provide asylum for Snowden, but he has not responded and appears unable to leave the transit zone of Sheremetyevo International Airport.

He exposed a program known as Prism that relied on customer data supplied by major technology companies.

"Countries and people that have fallen victim to gringo spying should sue the United States to ensure fair compensation. We're going to bankrupt the U.S. economy!" wrote Varela, known for radical rhetoric and ardent support of the late socialist leader Hugo Chavez.

Sennheiser's Colorful Cans Value Style as Much as Sound

Sennheiser's Colorful Cans Value Style as Much as Sound

Sennheiser is usually known for high-end audio quality and rather clunky design. That changed, a little, with its Momentum headphones?but now the act is smartened up even further with these colorful cans.

These over-the-ear headphones are smaller, neater version of the first Momentums?in fact, they pack the same audio innards. But just of much as a draw as the audio quality here is the design.

Sennheiser has clearly done its research here, picking out some of the big color trends of the moment for its new cans, which are available in pistachio, cream, blue and pink. Trimmed with Alcantara?the material that crops up in high-end sports cars and yachts?they are an absolute pleasure to look at. They'll be available later this month for $230.

'Drone It Yourself' turns (not quite) anything into a quadcopter

Drone kit

Jasper Van Loenen

The drone kit applied to a keyboard.

If you want a drone but you feel all the existing options aren't quite your style, you may want to give a "Drone It Yourself" kit a try. Clip the rotors and power supply to your phone or book or cardboard box or piece of toast, and watch it take flight!

Everything required appears in that stylish case below: four rotors, a power supply and flight control unit. The idea is to just unpack it, assemble and attach to the lucky item that will be your new drone body. It won't support anything that ways more than a couple of pounds, though: Drones have to be light to get off the ground, so your dreams of flying toasters may go unfulfilled for now.

Kit 1

Jasper Van Loenen

The full kit, with 3-D printed pieces and motorized parts.

It's not for sale just yet, but the kit is really nothing more than 3-D printed parts that attach with clamps. And the creator, Jasper Van Loenen, has made the printer files available, so you can make them yourself.

Some expertise is required, of course. Your paperback or toy car may not handle as well as an item that was actually meant to fly. But it could be a fun project for the savvy RC and 3-D printing fans out there to try on a summer afternoon.

SAN DIEGO AND BEER-SHEVA, ISRAELJuly 9, 2013 -- Sorrento Therapeutics, Inc. (OTCQB: SRNE; Sorrento) and B.G. Negev Technologies and Applications Ltd., the technology transfer company of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU), have announced an option and license agreement to develop therapeutic products to treat Hepatitis C Virus (HCV).

"We are pleased to be collaborating with Sorrento to develop our fully human anti-HCV antibody clones into potential anti-HCV therapeutics," said Leslie Lobel, M.D., Ph.D., a lecturer and vice chair of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Genetics in BGU's Faculty of Health Sciences. Dr. Lobel identified the antibody clones from patients who have recovered from HCV infections.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), more than 170 million people worldwide are chronically infected with Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), including approximately 3.2 million people in the United States.

This collaborative effort utilizes the respective strengths of each organization to create an important product opportunity consisting of therapeutic and/or prophylactic agents against HCV infections. Sorrento, a San Diego-based company, will be responsible for developing the anti-HCV antibody products.

"Sorrento has already achieved many successes using its proprietary G-MAB library to identify, characterize and develop fully human antibodies against difficult targets relevant to infectious agents," said Henry Ji, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of Sorrento.

"We are excited to be working with Dr. Lobel to add a program targeting HCV to our existing portfolio of therapeutic antibodies for the prevention and/or treatment of major infectious diseases." Doron Krakow, executive vice president of American Associates, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev said, "It is exciting that another medical breakthrough emanating from BGU's research laboratories will potentially become a product that could help people suffering from hepatitis.

"Dr. Lobel was a pioneer at BGU, born and educated in the U.S., who chose to establish his research in the Negev Desert rather than at a top American medical university, so this is a truly significant development," Krakow added.

Lobel to add a program targeting HCV to our existing portfolio of therapeutic antibodies for the prevention and/or treatment of major infectious diseases."
