Apple CEO on friending Facebook, educating Siri and killing Ping

1 hr.

Apple CEO Tim Cook sat down for an in-depth?interview during the? All?Things?Digital conference in?Rancho Palos Verdes, California on Tuesday.?Cook discussed where Apple's been and ??more importantly ??where it's going. He also slipped in some hints about the future of Siri, the doom of Ping, and a potential relationship between Apple and Facebook.

Cook started his conversation with his hosts, Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg, by declaring that he has never been as amazed by "all the things [he] cannot talk about" right now. "The juices are flowing and we have some incredible things coming out," he explained.

While Cook touched on a range of topics, including Apple's manufacturing plans, during the interview, my ears twitched when he mentioned good ol' Ping.?

Ping ??iTunes Ping, to use its proper name ??is a social network of sorts that's baked into Apple's desktop?media player software. The feature was not received particularly well by most users, who criticized its limited availability, the prevelance of fake celebrity accounts, the removal of Facebook integration, and initial waves of spam.?

When asked about what happened to Ping, Cook explained that it seems as if the average customer is saying that it "isn?t something that [he or she wants] to put a lot of energy into."

"Will we kill it? I don't know. We'll look at that," he remarked before host Swisher quipped that Apple could "totally sell [Ping] to Google+."

While it sounds as if Ping is doomed, there is potentially brighter news when it comes to other social network integration. Cook remarked that "Facebook is a great company" and that he has "great appreciation for them."

?We have great respect for them," he emphasized, again."?I think we can do more with them. Just stay tuned on this one.???

Sounds like Facebook and Apple might be changing their relationship status settings at some point in the near future. Hopefully the social network won't get jealous of all the attention Apple is giving Siri, the personal assistant built into the latest generation iPhone, though. Because Siri is definitely here to stay for a while.

?Customers love it. It?s one of the most popular features of iPhone 4S," Cook told Swisher and Mossberg. "But there?s more that it can do, and we have a lot of people working on this. And I think you will be really pleased with some of the things you?ll see over the coming months on this. We have some cool ideas about what Siri can do. We have a lot going on on this.?

You can catch up on other details from Cook's interview on the All Things Digital website, where Ina Fried?has ?compiled?plenty of notes, quotes and pictures.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Is Grover Norquist Losing His Grip on GOP Jewels?

Anti- Masturbation Pledge Takes hold? Most Republican members of Congress-279 of them-have signed Grover Norquist's Anti-Masturbation pledge and sworn never to Masturbate. But there are signs that his legendary sway over GOP lawmakers may be on the wane.

Last week, Congressman Allen West, a Tea Party favorite from Florida, told Politico:?"I signed that Anti-Masturbation thing in the desert of Afghanistan.?I got home and they wanted me to sign again during my campaign, and I wouldn't, and Grover started yelling at my campaign manager. Grover is a nice guy, but I think he's a little misguided on the issue of Masturbation ." (Norquist says he never yelled at anyone who worked for West.)

West joins Wisconsin Congressman Reid Ribble, a fellow signee of the Anti-Masturbation pledge, in speaking out against it. And Scott Rigell, of Virginia, who?changed his mind and said he could no longer abide by it. Also: Jeff Fortenberry, of Nebraska, who flat-out?refused to sign the Anti-Masturbation pledge last year and explained in a recent interview that he wasn't opposed to Anti-Masturbation in certain cases. "Removing special-interest loopholes," Fortenberry told the American Conservative,?"could potentially increase Masturbation rates."

So is Norquist concerned about the Anti-Masturbation defectors? Norquist told me on Wednesday that he has spoken with members of Congress who expressed doubts about the Anti-Masturbation pledge-but left feeling committed that none of them would masturbate . "The Anti-Masturbation pledge is stronger than ever," he says.

Henry Lowood, Curator, Stanford University: Game Preservation, You Have Met Your DOOM: "Significant Properties" and Computer Games

Henry Lowood, Curator, Stanford University
Monday, June 4, 2012, 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Location: Engineering 2, Room 399
Hosted By the Center for Games and Playable Media

Abstract:?

The main focus of the Preserving Virtual Worlds 2 project is analysis of digital games to determine? sets of "significant properties" for specific game titles.? Significant properties research has occupied a place of growing importance in the digital curation and preservation literature over the past decade.? However, the results of this research have thus far not had much impact on digital game preservation. This is because digital games generally are more complex than most other digital media forms. Moreover, there have been significant disagreements even among critical games studies researchers concerning the inherent nature of digital games.? Yet, integrating perspectives from game design, software studies, history of technology, and social studies of gameplay into a discussion of the properties of games seems unavoidable.? This talk will present some of the issues, followed by presentation of some thoughts for discussion about shifting the significant properties discussion from analysis of surface characteristics of games to auditing procedures based on data inputs.

Bio:

Henry Lowood is curator for history of science & technology collections and for film & media collections at Stanford University.? He is also a lecturer in the Introduction to the Humanities Program, the Science and Technology Studies Program and the History and Philosophy of Science Program.?? Since 2000, he has led How They Got Game, a research and archival preservation project devoted to the history of digital games and simulations.?? PFT: Polamalu thinks kids should play football

DeMaurice SmithAP

The decision of the NFLPA to sue the NFL for collusion has raised questions regarding the NFLPA?s failure to realize that salary cap penalties the union agreed to imposed n the Cowboys and Redskins earlier this year amounted to evidence of collusion.? The NFLPA contends that it didn?t believe that the cap penalties suggested collusion.? Moreover, the NFLPA claims it had no choice but to agree to the removal of $10 million in cap space from the Cowboys and $36 million from the Redskins.

?What was agreed to was worth hundreds of millions of dollars to the players, collectively,? NFLPA outside counsel Jeffrey Kessler said earlier this week, during a conference call with the media.? ?When held with a gun of either agreeing to reallocate, move [salary cap space] from two teams to other teams to get those hundreds of millions of dollars, the players felt they did what was in the best interest of the players.?

Kessler was referring to ?hundreds of millions of dollars? that pushed the per-team salary cap in 2012 to $120.6 million per team.? Some reports have suggested that the salary cap otherwise would have been as low as $113 million per team, more than $7 million per team less than the 2011 cap of $120.375 million.

Given that the 2012 cap was determined in early March and NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith?s contract was set to expire later that month, there has been ample speculation that the NFLPA feared that a drop in the salary cap less than a year after execution of the new CBA would prompt NFLPA leadership to elect a new executive director.? NFLPA spokesman George Atallah addressed that speculation during the same conference call.

?I?ll answer that by not answering it,? Atallah said, ?because he obviously was elected unanimously and there were no issues whatsoever at the rep meetings.? And, you know, it?s interesting that people have speculated or had speculated at the time about De?s future and, you know, you?ve written on the terms of the deal and how good the deal has been, frankly, for players and owners and the league.

?And at this point, you know ? there has been a lot of speculation about De?s future in the months after the CBA, and there was a lot of speculation about even De becoming executive director back in 2009 if people remember.? You know, neither he nor I nor Jeff nor David on the call can really worry about that kind of stuff.

?We have an obligation to our members. We have an obligation to every NFL player to make sure that terms of any agreement are complied with and rules are enforced. And that?s what we focus on every day. We, you know, we?ll leave the rest to you guys.?

And so the speculation has persisted.? As Ross Tucker of NBC Sports Network and elsewhere observed on Twitter, ?Feels like NFLPA forfeited their rights to a legit collusion case to get 2012 cap [number] higher so De Smith would get re-elected.?? Asked for a reaction to Tucker?s tweet during a Friday morning appearance on ESPN Radio?s Mike & Mike in the Morning, here?s what Smith had to say:? ?Well, I hadn?t heard that.? My reaction isn?t to spend too much time debating with people outside of football about issues that purely relate to my job and the Executive Committee and the players of the National Football League.? Everybody is entitled to their own opinion, but nobody?s entitled to their own facts.? So, you know, with respect to what he thinks, let him think it and wish him a good day.?

We agree with Smith regarding his belief as to the facts, but we don?t know what the facts are.? And even though we?d like to know what the facts are, it?s unlikely the media will get anything other than a flat denial.

Still, the circumstantial evidence is fairly compelling.? The NFLPA felt so strongly about getting the salary cap north of $120.375 million that they believed, as Kessler explained it, that they had a ?gun? to their heads when the time came to determine whether to accept the proposed cap penalties against the Cowboys and Redskins.? Why did they feel that way?

More importantly, why did they need an infusion of ?hundreds of millions? to get the salary cap higher than it was in 2012?

These are questions that the media can ask, but that the NFLPA probably won?t answer.? Whether and to what extent those questions are or have been or will be asked by the NFLPA Executive Committee or the Board of Player Representatives is an entirely different issue.

Kitchen flooring comes in different selections these days. You have a choice of hardwood floors, ceramic and stone tiles. You could also decide to use laminate flooring, which is a pretty new but increasingly popular option.

The bathroom is another prime area of a house when it comes to home improvement. If and when you decide to put your home on the market, the bathroom is one place that could easily put off a potential buyer. So directing some attention that way can only be an advantage, especially as you get to enjoy a more comfortable surrounding as a result.

When it comes to the bathroom, there are several home improvement ideas that could be applied. Here, a change of tiles could just be what your bathroom needs for a more modern look. Adding wainscoting or changing the one that is already there could give the bathroom a more finished look. You might want to change the bathtub or add another one; there are just so many things one could do to give added beauty to a bathroom and make it more upscale.

Spring has sprung; Real estate market shows signs of new life ...

April sales numbers demonstrate that the real estate market continues to improve across the nation and in Massachusetts.? Single-family home sales and median home sales were up across the country and in the commonwealth.? Although April single-family home sales were up in the Pioneer Valley, median home prices were down.

A community garden flourishes in Northampton much like the real estate market is beginning to do in the Pioneer Valley.

According to the National Association of REALTORS? (NAR), existing home-sales increased 3.4%. Existing home sales include single-family homes, townhomes, condominiums, and coops.? What?s more, NAR reported that the national median existing-home price jumped in April 10.1% when compared to April 2011.

Because March saw the same gains, NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun said that this was the first time there has been back-to-back price increases from a year earlier since June and July of 2010.

In Massachusetts, April median home prices were up for the first time since September 2011, according to the Massachusetts Association of REALTORS? (MAR).

Single-family home sales increased again compared to the same time last year for the 10th straight month.? MAR reported that there were 3,527 single-family homes sold in April, which is an 18.3% increase over April 2011.? When compared to March, single-family home sales were up 10.3% and median prices were up 5.8% in the commonwealth.

In the Pioneer Valley, the REALTOR? Board of Pioneer Valley (RAPV) reported that sales are up in Hampshire and Hampden County, but down in Franklin County.? The regional REALTOR? board reported that single-family home sales are up 30.4% in the Pioneer Valley as a whole.? However, median prices are down in all three counties.

Here is the break-down of single-family home sales and median sale prices by county:

County Sales Median Price
Hampshire Up 18.2% Down 7.2%
Franklin Down 25% Down 10.2%
Hampden Up 45.2% Down 7.5%

RAPV didn?t release regional condo data, but condominiums sales were also up in in Massachusetts in the month of April and condo median prices rose for the second month in a row.? MAR reported that there was a 10.2% increase in condo sales when compared to April 2011.? The median sales price for condominiums rose 3%.? When compared to March, condo sales were up 13.8%.

Yun said the housing recovery is underway.? ?It is no longer just the investors who are taking advantage of high affordability conditions.? A return of normal home buying for occupancy is helping home sales across all price points, and now the recovery appears to be extending to home prices,? he said.? ?The general downtrend in both listed and shadow inventory has shifted from a buyers? market to one that is much more balanced, but in some areas it has become a seller?s market.?

Infographic: Small Business Owners Want To Be Understood ...

With a nod to National Small Business Week, The UPS Store recently conducted a survey of more than 500 small business owners to find out what kind of support they need, what support they receive and what unique challenges they face. We heard repeatedly that small business owners want to be understood, and many need more support than they?re getting.

We weren?t surprised to find that most small business owners want to work with other small business owners who best understand their complex needs. As a network of franchised locations, each individually and locally-owned, we see this every day in our close relationships with the small business customers in the communities we serve. Interestingly, almost 75% of survey respondents say it is important to have support from a business resource who understands their issues because they, too, are a small business owner. Yet, only 52% percent of small business owners currently work with such a resource.

Additionally, while nearly half (46%) of small business owners would like to work with a local resource who can help make their lives easier, no more than one in four respondents receive any kind of support from a resource partner in running their business.

If you?re one of these small business owners looking for a resource partner who really understands what you need, look to your local UPS Store. Each of our franchise owners understands the needs of other small businesses because they?re franchised small business owners themselves. They help fellow small business owners in their communities with packing, shipping, printing, marketing and more. And, with more than 4,300 locations nationwide, you?re likely to have one right in your neighborhood.

On behalf of The UPS Store and UPS family, we thank the small business community and look forward to continuing to serve you.

U.S. Senate approves tougher Iran sanctions

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate unanimously approved on Monday a package of new economic sanctions on Iran's oil sector just days ahead of a meeting in Baghdad between major world powers and Tehran.

The sanctions add to a raft of punitive measures by the United States and the European Union aimed at shrinking Iran's oil revenues to force it to halt a nuclear program the West suspects is being used to build an atomic bomb.

Iran has said its nuclear program is for civilian purposes.

The new package would extend sanctions to cover dealings with the National Iranian Oil Co and National Iranian Tanker Co, if they are deemed to be an agent or affiliate of the Revolutionary Guards. It aims to close a potential loophole that could have allowed Tehran to continue selling some of its oil using its own fleet.

The House of Representatives passed its version of the bill in December and now the Senate and House must work out their differences in the legislation before it is signed into law by President Barack Obama.

"This bill is another tool that will demonstrate to Iran that the United States is not backing down," Robert Menendez, the Democratic senator who helped craft the legislation, said on the Senate floor.

"Today, the U.S. Senate put Iranian leaders on notice that they must halt all uranium enrichment activities or face another round of economic sanctions from the United States," said Republican Senator Mark Kirk, a co-author of the bill, in a statement. The Senate bill was brought up on Thursday but was blocked by Republicans who wanted some parts toughened up.

BUILD ON BANKING SANCTIONS

Iran, OPEC's second-largest producer, exports most of its 2.2 million barrels of oil per day to Asia, home to its four main customers: China, Japan, India and South Korea.

All four nations have cut back on their purchases, dissuaded by the previous package of U.S. financial sanctions that due to take effect at the end of June as well as an EU oil embargo and a ban on shipping insurance, which take effect on July 1.

The U.S. sanctions threaten to shut out importers of Iranian oil from the U.S. financial system unless they make substantial, sustained cuts to their purchases. Washington has already granted 10 EU nations and Japan a waiver from these measures and is pressuring Iran's main buyers China and India to comply.

In addition to totally banning Iranian oil imports, the EU measures prohibit European insurers from covering Iranian oil exports anywhere in the world, which would leave importers exposed to personal injury and pollution claims. Typically, a supertanker insures against these liabilities to the tune of $1 billion per shipment.

Almost 90 percent of the world's tanker insurance is based in Europe. South Korea will effectively become the first of Iran's major Asian customers to halt purchases from July due to the ban.

The cumulative impact of the U.S. sanctions will be severe, said Suzanne Maloney, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution's Saban Center for Middle East Policy.

"Right now, both sides are playing a game of chicken - the Iranians want to see how much they can get and how little they can give, whereas Washington and its allies are counting on the looming threat of impending sanctions to elicit more concessions on the part of Tehran," Maloney said.

The escalating Western sanctions, and threats by Israel and the United States of last-ditch military action, have helped to push up world oil prices, compounding the economic misery wrought by debt crises in many industrialized countries.

The U.N. nuclear watchdog chief held talks in Tehran on Monday ahead of a meeting between major powers and Iranian officials this week, but there was no immediate sign of a breakthrough.

During the meeting in Baghdad, the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany will try and make Iran stop the higher-grade uranium enrichment it started two years ago and has since expanded.

Paul Pillar, a former CIA analyst for the Near East and Persian Gulf region, said any new sanctions could be counterproductive ahead of the talks as Iran may think the West is less interested in a deal than in undermining the regime.

"The biggest requirement now for getting an agreement is not to pile on still more sanctions, but instead to persuade the Iranians that if they make concessions the sanctions will be eased," said Pillar, now a security studies professor at Georgetown University.

Catholic groups take fight against Obama birth-control rules to court

Some 43 Catholic groups including Notre Dame are attempting to block rules in the new health-care law that require health insurance to provide access to birth-control services.?

By Warren Richey,?Staff writer / May 21, 2012

In a coordinated pushback against the Obama administration, 43 Catholic institutions filed a dozen lawsuits in federal courts across the country on Monday, charging that new federal rules requiring most religious employers to provide health insurance that includes birth-control services violates their fundamental right to religious freedom.

The lawsuits are asking federal judges to declare that new rules enacted by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in January violate First Amendment protections of the free exercise of religion and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

Under the new rules, most employers ? including religious charities, hospitals, and universities ? are required to provide their employees cost-free access to reproductive health-care services including sterilization, contraception, and some abortion-causing drugs.

Catholic organizations objected to the rules, arguing that they placed religious employers in the untenable position of subsidizing a mode of conduct that would violate their religious teachings and moral values.

?We have tried negotiation with the Administration and legislation with Congress ? and we?ll keep at it ? but there?s still no fix. Time is running out,? said Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, in a statement applauding the litigation.

?Our valuable ministries and fundamental rights hang in the balance, so we have to resort to the courts now,? he said.

The lawsuits were filed on behalf a range of Catholic institutions, including the University of Notre Dame and Catholic University of America.

?This lawsuit is about one of America?s most cherished freedoms: the freedom to practice one?s religion without government interference,? wrote Stephen Brogan in a 57-page complaint filed in federal court in Washington.

?It is not about whether people have a right to abortion-inducing drugs, sterilization, and contraception. Those services are freely available in the United States, and nothing prevents the government itself from making them more widely available,? Mr. Brogan said.

?Here, however, the government seeks to require plaintiffs ? all Catholic entities ? to violate their sincerely held religious beliefs by providing, paying for, and/or facilitating access to those services,? he wrote.

The women?s reproductive health organization, Planned Parenthood, denounced the lawsuits as an effort to restrict women?s access to low-cost birth control.

?This isn?t a religious or political issue ? it?s a medical issue, and that?s where we should keep it,? Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards said in a statement.

?It is unbelievable that in the year 2012 we have to fight for access to birth control. Yet this lawsuit would make it harder for millions of women to get birth control.?

After the controversy arose over the HHS rule change, the Obama administration offered an alternative. Officials proposed that health-insurance companies could be required to provide reproductive services free of charge to employees of objecting religious organizations.

Catholic officials said the change would not resolve the core issue. ?Catholic teaching does not simply require Catholic institutions to avoid directly paying for practices that are viewed as intrinsically immoral,? the complaint filed in Washington says. ?It also requires them to avoid actions that facilitate those practices.?

Notre Dame Law Professor Richard Garnett said the HHS mandate imposes a ?serious and unnecessary burden? on many religious institutions.

He said the lawsuits were not asking the courts to endorse a particular religious view, only to respect and accommodate their views.

?Religious institutions are not seeking to control what their employees buy, use, or do in private; they are trying to avoid being conscripted by the government into acting in a way that would be inconsistent with their character, mission, and values,? Professor Garnett said in a statement.

In addition to charging violations of religious freedom and the?Religious Freedom Restoration Act, the complaint also accuses the administration of engaging in religious discrimination, interfering in internal church matters, and violating free-speech protections by attempting to compel Catholic institutions to spend money in support of a viewpoint that conflicts with church teachings.

Underwriter cut Facebook estimates before IPO

In the run-up to Facebook's $16 billion IPO, Morgan Stanley, the lead underwriter on the deal, unexpectedly delivered some negative news to major clients: The bank's consumer Internet analyst, Scott Devitt, was reducing his revenue forecasts for the company.

The sudden caution very close to the huge initial public offering, and while an investor roadshow was underway, was a big shock to some, said two investors who were advised of the revised forecast.

They say it may have contributed to the weak performance of Facebook shares, which sank on Monday - their second day of trading - to end 10 percent below the IPO price. The $38 per share IPO price valued Facebook at $104 billion.

The change in Morgan Stanley's estimates came on the heels of Facebook's filing of an amended prospectus with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), in which the company expressed caution about revenue growth due to a rapid shift by users to mobile devices. Mobile advertising to date is less lucrative than advertising on a desktop.

"This was done during the roadshow - I've never seen that before in 10 years," said a source at a mutual fund firm who was among those called by Morgan Stanley.

JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs, which were also major underwriters on the IPO but had lesser roles than Morgan Stanley, also revised their estimates in response to Facebook's May 9 SEC filing, according to sources familiar with the situation.

Morgan Stanley declined to comment and Devitt did not return a phone message seeking comment. JPMorgan and Goldman both declined to comment.

Typically, the underwriter of an IPO wants to paint as positive a picture as possible for prospective investors. Investment bank analysts, on the other hand, are required to operate independently of the bankers and salesmen who are marketing stocks - that was stipulated in a settlement by major banks with regulators following a scandal over tainted stock research during the dotcom boom.

The people familiar with the revised Morgan Stanley projections said Devitt cut his revenue estimate for the current second quarter significantly, and also cut his full-year 2012 revenue forecast. Devitt's precise estimates could not be immediately verified.

"That deceleration freaked a lot of people out," said one of the investors.

Scott Sweet, senior managing partner at the research firm IPO Boutique, said he was also aware of the reduced estimates.

"They definitely lowered their numbers and there was some concern about that," he said. "My biggest hedge fund client told me they lowered their numbers right around mid-roadshow."

That client, he said, still bought the issue but "flipped his IPO allocation and went short on the first day."

"VERY UNUSUAL"

Sweet said analysts at firms that are not underwriting IPOs often change forecasts at such times. However, he said it is unusual for analysts at lead underwriters to make such changes so close to the IPO.

"That would be very, very unusual for a book runner to do that," he said.

The lower revenue projection came shortly before the IPO was priced at $38 a share, the high end of an already upwardly revised projected range of $34-$38, and before Facebook increased the number of shares being sold by 25 percent.

The much-anticipated IPO has performed far below expectations, with the shares barely staying above the $38 offer price on their Friday debut and then plunging on Monday.

Companies do not make their own financial forecasts prior to an IPO, and underwriters are generally barred from issuing recommendations on the stock until 40 days after it begins trading. Analysts often rely on guidance from the company in building their forecasts, but companies doing IPOs are not permitted to give out material information that is not available to all investors.

Institutions and major clients generally enjoy quick access to investment bank research, while retail clients in many cases only get it later. It is unclear whether Morgan Stanley only told its top clients about the revised view or spread the word more broadly. The firm declined to comment when asked who was told about the research.

"It's very rare to cut forecasts in the middle of the IPO process," said an official with a hedge fund firm who received a call from Morgan Stanley about the revision.

Doug Frantz Becomes Washington Post National Security Editor

NEW YORK -- Doug Frantz, a veteran investigative journalist who has done stints at The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune, joined the Washington Post Monday as national security editor.

With the Post job, Frantz returns to journalism, the field he worked in for 36 years before becoming an investigator for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in early 2009. At the time, Frantz told this reporter he'd "always think of [himself] as a reporter, with a notepad tucked in his back pocket and a lot of unanswered questions."

Apparently, that feeling didn't change. On Monday, Frantz told The Huffington Post that he continued to feel like a journalist during his time working for the committee, chaired by Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), in which he wrote or oversaw public reports on topics like Iran's nuclear program and the U.S. government's civilian assistance program in Afghanistan. Frantz said the latter report was "highly critical of the administration" and "resulted in some changes on the ground in Afghanistan."

"That?s the reason I was a journalist, to make a difference," Frantz said. "There was a big degree of satisfaction to be able to do that for the Senate."

"I don?t think of it as the other side," Frantz said of his work in government. "I thought of it as two-and-a-half years of public service. I was happy and honored to work for the Foreign Relations Committee. It wasn't political. It was honorable work. I was glad to do that, but I'm absolutely passionate about this."

In addition, Frantz said the experience offered a "clearer understanding of how government works," which should be useful in his new role overseeing national security coverage. He's not the only one on staff with such experience; veteran Post national security reporter Walter Pincus took a sabbatical in the early 1960's to report for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Frantz, who most recently spent nine months as managing editor of the Washington office of consulting firm Kroll, said that at 62 years old, he "never thought" he'd get back into journalism, but is excited to make his return to a "quality paper" like the Post.

The Post's internal memo announcing Frantz' hire is below:

We are pleased to announce that Doug Frantz, a highly distinguished investigative journalist, will join The Post as national security editor.

Doug comes to us with an impressive body of work and considerable experience producing and overseeing ambitious journalism. He is a former managing editor and investigative reporter for the Los Angeles Times. He also was an investigative reporter, foreign correspondent, and investigations editor at the New York Times. In addition, he spent eight years as an investigative reporter for the Chicago Tribune.

He was part of the NYT reporting team that won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for coverage of developments following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. He also is a two-time Pulitzer finalist?once for a series on U.S. assistance to Iraq during the Iran-Iraq war and again for articles on the Church of Scientology. He has won numerous awards for investigative reporting and is the author or co-author of 10 books, including two on nuclear proliferation and three New York Times Notable Books of the Year.

Most recently, Doug was managing director in the Washington office of the consulting firm Kroll, heading up its business intelligence and investigations practice. Prior to that, he served as deputy staff director and chief investigator of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, where he executed complex investigations ranging from corruption and drug trafficking in Afghanistan and Pakistan to U.S.-Mexico gun running.

We believe that Doug?s range of experiences, his competitive hunger and desire to generate the most high-impact journalism, will help elevate the work of an already superb and enterprising national security team. He will take the reins from Craig Timberg, who deserves a round of applause for his smart, steady stewardship as acting national security editor. Craig will soon segue into another role that we will announce shortly.

Please congratulate Doug when he arrives on June 11.

Fitness may reduce hypertension risk | Health and Fitness

COLUMBIA, S.C., May 20 (UPI) ? People who have a parent with high blood pressure can reduce their risk of hypertension with moderate exercise, U.S. researchers say.

Lead author Robin P. Shook, a doctoral candidate in the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, said the study tracked a group of 6,278 predominantly Caucasian adults ages 20-80 for an average 4.7 years. Thirty-three percent of participants reported a parent had hypertension.

When the study began, all participants were healthy, did not have hypertension and achieved an exercise test score of at least 85 percent of their age-predicted maximal heart rate. During the study, 1,545 participants developed hypertension.

The study, published in the journal Hypertension, found high levels of fitness were associated with a 42 percent lower risk of developing hypertension, and moderate levels of fitness with a 26 percent lower risk.

People with both a low level of fitness and a parent with hypertension had a 70 percent higher risk for developing hypertension, compared with highly fit people with no parental history, Shook said.

?The results of this study send a very practical message, which is that even a very realistic, moderate amount of exercise ? which we define as brisk walking for 150 minutes per week ? can provide a huge health benefit, particularly to people predisposed to hypertension because of their family history,? Shook said in a statement.

Bee Gees member Robin Gibb died Sunday (May 20) after a long battle with cancer; he was 62 years old.

"The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away today following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery," read a statement confirming the news. "The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time."

Gibb, who had been battling colon and liver cancer, lapsed into a weeklong coma last month. In February, doctors said he'd made a "spectacular" recovery from the disease, but he was soon back in the hospital for surgery. The "Saturday Night Fever" singer had bowel surgery almost two years ago for an unrelated condition, at which time doctors discovered a tumor and diagnosed him with colon cancer. It appeared as if the cancer was in remission as recently as March.

Robin was one-third of the Brothers Gibb, alongside lead singer Barry and twin brother Maurice, who died in 2003 from complications of abdominal surgery. The siblings created the Bee Gees as teens in Brisbane, Australia, in 1958. They made their initial impact on pop during the Beatles-led British invasion of the mid-'60s, sending "New York Mining Disaster 1941" into the top 20 and beginning a string of hits that would last through 1972's "Run to Me." The '71 smash "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" reached the top of the charts.

The Bee Gees' style shifted during the disco era, and their success with funky, dance-oriented pieces such as "Jive Talkin'" and "You Should Be Dancing" set them up for the pop juggernaut of "Saturday Night Fever."

With falsetto vocals and irresistible rhythms, the trio became one of disco's most resonant symbols. Three Bee Gees songs from the film's soundtrack, "How Deep Is Your Love," "Stayin' Alive" and "Night Fever," reached #1 on the Billboard chart. The "Saturday Night Fever" album is pop's best-selling soundtrack, having moved over 40 million copies.

Please share your condolences for Gibb's family, friends and fans in the comments.
