Akhtar Badshah: From Seattle to Singapore: How Microsoft Is Taking Lessons From Young People

There are 1.2 billion young people on our planet today -- more than ever before and the numbers continue to grow with projections of 1.5 billion young people by 2035. Many of them are doing amazing things. They are innovating, they are inspiring and they are driving real impact.

We believe we can learn a lot from their work, their energy and their passion. We want to hear from them directly on the best way we can support them. That's why we're holding six events around the world starting in Seattle this weekend and then visiting Cairo, Singapore, Brussels, Beijing and Mexico City.

As part of the events we're launching the Innovate4Good @Microsoft community, a place where young people around the world can come together, collaborate, inspire and support each other.

Our goal is simple. Create a global movement for young people who enable them to:

  • Connect to others who want to make a real impact for a better tomorrow... for themselves, for their community and for the world
  • Envision new ideas and work together to create and seize new opportunities
  • Access Microsoft and its resources, programs, and events in their communities
  • Discover how others have used Microsoft technology and programs to do amazing things

These events and the Innovate4Good @Microsoft community are just a start.

We must actively enable young people to overcome unique issues that no other generation has faced. The private, public and nonprofits sectors must come together to help youth cross the emerging opportunity divide between those who have the skills, education and opportunities to succeed and those who don't.

At Microsoft, we are creating a new set of programs, partnerships and resources, all focused on helping youth realize their opportunity in the world, whether they aspire to reach higher levels of education, start or grow their career, become an entrepreneur or generate social good.

Please join us. It's in everyone's best interest. You can follow the conversation with the #innovateforgood on Twitter or on our Facebook page.

Our Silent Roar | Shameless Survivors

?You just don?t know looking at a person what their story is.? PianoGirl

Through openly sharing my story, I have had the privilege to meet some amazing women, and hear their stories. Most who have been silent for many years. What a precious honor to be the one who is trusted to listen and record them. Through them I have learned more about myself and more about my own inner strength.

The woman I have quoted, a stunningly beautiful Afro-American woman whose path I would not have ordinarily crossed, shared her strength with me through this statement: ?Women are lionesses; powerful. We give life and we turn around and feed life. How are we not awesome? ?I really believe that. Every women is just amazing. I feel this connection because you are a woman and I am a woman.?

As I read this now I wonder how it is our connection is made solid by the very bond of the abuse we experienced?? We, these powerful women, at the height of our struggle commonly, yet silently and unknowingly bonded by our powerlessness. How are we transformed from strong, resourceful, dynamic women by our abusers? Is it the very essence of who we are, the spunky fight in us our abusers seek to break down, like a drill sergeant takes away the will of his troops and rebuilds them to take orders only from him? Is it our very strength that is so threatening?

In Not To People Like Us Dr. Susan Weitzman puts forth many of us share a common vision of what marriage should be. We combine a Cinderella/Prince Charming-he is my knight in shining armor hope at a time when many of us are vulnerable, perhaps experiencing an emotional stress or loss when we met our abuser. We unwittingly set the relationship dynamics when our abusers test the water initially and are rewarded with our continued loyalty.

I believe it is how we view the relationship and marriage as an entity separate and outside ourselves. I wanted to be married and I wanted to be a wife. That I was doing it with someone who treated me like an emotional punching bag was what had to be done to achieve that. I wanted my relationship/marriage to work. I am resourceful and smart and get things done. I don?t fail. I could MAKE it work. I saw my parent?s marriage worked, and my dear friend?s marriages worked. I would watch them, I would watch my neighbors walking sometimes in the evening, holding hands, and laughing. I?d think THAT is what I want! That is it! What I didn?t understand is it wasn?t THAT, it was THEM. It is the individuals who make ?that?, not the ?marriage/relationship?.

So here we are, these very strong, independent, willful, dynamic women and we are used to getting things done, making things happen in our lives. Somewhere when that first line is crossed and an unconscious permission is granted, we are no longer attuned to what is within our power, and what we cannot change. If we find ourselves questioning is it is abusive behavior, it probably is. Healthy relationships don?t elicit this uncertainty.

It took my ?relationship? with a bachelor, never married yet emotionally aware, to truly understand, finally, albeit a little late in the game, we can?t make other people think the way we do. Treat us the way we treat them or how we would like to be treated. Want what we want. Think what we think. Feel what we feel. Sometimes we simply have to reassess how the relationship works, perhaps adjust our thinking, our course, to meet the other person where they are. Sometimes we need to try to understand where they are coming from and where they are. In abusive relationships we lose sigh of who and where we are. We can bail. We can maintain the relationship without holding onto the outcome, but accept that risk is an outcome like mine, or we can build other healthy relationships so that the outcome of that one relationship isn?t so important. To see the ?us? and where we fit in the relationship rather than the relationship itself.

But we can?t MAKE things work without a fully willing partner. We have to seek partners who get it. Get us. Partners who want what we are, have, offer, think, feel. We have to let go of hopes and dreams and maybes. At any given moment, we have to be here now because this is our reality of where we actually are. Not how they will be tomorrow, not the early years, but truly assess where we are right now and make our decisions on the truth of our own story.

?Listen to the tide slowly turning, wash all our heartaches away. We?re part of the fire that is burning, and from the ashes we can build another day.? J Hayward/The Story in Your Eyes

Reuters A panel of scientists that earlier warned the U.S. government about the risks of disclosing two research papers reversed course Friday, recommending that two studies on avian influenza be published in journals. In December, the same panel advised federal officials to ask two major journals, Science and Nature, to withhold details of the studies, sparking dueling debates over whether potentially dangerous research should be pursued at all, and what role the government should play in policing its dissemination. Both researchers had created mutations of the so-called bird flu virus that could easily jump between lab animals. The advisory panel, called the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity , had initially warned that full publication of the methods and results could offer a blueprint for terrorists who may want to make the highly lethal virus transmissible between humans. Normally, the virus spreads from poultry to humans, but not between humans. The panel reviewed revised versions of the two papers ? by Ron Fouchier of Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands and Yoshihiro Kawaoka of the University of Wisconsin ? on Thursday and Friday and decided the latest copies were fit for publication. ?The data described in the revised manuscripts do not appear to provide information that would immediately enable misuse of the research in ways that would endanger public health or national security,? according to a statement released by the panel. Dr. Kawaoka?s paper got a unanimous thumbs up from the reviewers, while Dr. Fouchier?s was recommended for publication by a 12-6 vote. The recommendations will go on to federal officials at the National Institutes of Health for a final decision. The December vote to recommend against publishing the full details of the study was the first such decision by the panel, and shook the life-sciences researchers who customarily publish their findings in full. Anthony Fauci , the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, a branch of the NIH, said in a brief interview that the federal health department would ?take this recommendation under advisement.? In a statement, Science, the journal that plans to publish Dr. Fouchier?s piece, said it applauded the advisory panel for reconsidering. Science said information presented at a recent World Health Organization meeting suggested Fouchier?s version of the virus was less dangerous than imagined, rebalancing the panel?s risk-benefit analysis. A spokeswoman for Nature couldn?t immediately be reached. The revised manuscripts will show, Science said, that Dr. Fouchier?s virus wasn?t fatal to his lab animals ? ferrets in this experiment ? when contracted through sneezes and coughs. ?The virus was fatal to ferrets only after animals were inoculated intratracheally at extremely high doses,? the statement said. Members of the advisory panel ? who were dispersing around the country following the meetings ? couldn?t immediately be reached.

(AP) ? Even the landed gentry of "Downton Abbey" would be impressed: A philanthropist is giving $1 million to PBS' "Masterpiece," U.S. home of the British upstairs-downstairs drama series.

The gift is the largest yet for the Masterpiece Trust, a fund-raising initiative started last year, PBS said Wednesday. The donor is Darlene Shiley of San Diego, who previously gave $250,000 to support "Masterpiece."

The drama showcase scored a hit with the second season of "Downton Abbey," which drew a total of 17 million viewers to make it the most-watched "Masterpiece" miniseries on record, PBS said.

"Masterpiece," from WGBH Boston, began searching for new funding sources after losing longtime sponsor Exxon Mobil in 2004. The series finally gained a new corporate supporter last year when Viking River Cruises came aboard.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Medical student Gregory Shumer studied the electronic health record and scooted his laptop closer to the diabetic grandfather sitting on his exam table. "You can see," he pointed at the screen ? weight, blood sugar and cholesterol are too high and rising.

The man didn't reveal he was too nearsighted to see those numbers, but he'd quietly volunteered that he'd been ignoring his own health after his wife's death. The future-Dr. Shumer looked away from the computer for a sympathetic conversation ? exactly the point of Georgetown University's novel training program.

As the nation moves to paperless medicine, doctors are grappling with an awkward challenge: How do they tap the promise of computers, smartphones and iPads in the exam room without losing the human connection with their patients? Are the gadgets a boon, or a distraction?

"That's the tension I feel every day," says Dr. Vincent WinklerPrins, a family medicine specialist at Georgetown. The medical school is developing one of a growing number of programs to train new doctors in that balancing act, this one using actors as patients to point out the pitfalls ahead of time.

Across the country at Stanford University this summer, medical students will bring a school-issued iPad along as they begin their bedside training ? amid cautions not to get so lost in all the on-screen information that they pay too little attention to the actual patient.

Face your patient, excuse yourself to check the screen and put away the gadget when you don't really need it, say Stanford guidelines that specialists say make sense for physicians everywhere. And, of course, no personal Internet use in front of a patient.

"The promise of these devices to augment the delivery of clinical care is tremendous," says Stanford's Dr. Clarence Braddock. He uses a secure app on his iPad to pull up patient charts if he's called after hours no matter where he is.

Braddock helped develop Stanford's standards understanding there are different hurdles. Middle-aged doctors may be less comfortable with the technology and take longer with it. Younger ones who grew up texting while multitasking may not realize how intrusive patients might find the devices. Even Braddock has a confession: To his embarrassment, his phone once beeped an email alert about a sports tournament while he was with a patient.

It's not just a matter of etiquette. If the doctor spends too much of your 15-minute visit typing or staring at a screen, you have to wonder: What if I have a symptom that just got missed?

"If the screen is turned away from the patient, they don't know if you're looking at their electronic health record or playing solitaire or looking up stocks," notes Dr. Glen Stream of the American Academy of Family Physicians. A longtime user of computerized records in his Spokane, Wash., practice, Stream makes sure to show his patients what he's doing ? especially when seeing pictures on the screen can help them better understand a health condition.

Electronic health records, or EHRs, are considered the future of health care for good reason ? they can help prevent medical errors. For example, the systems can warn if doctors are about to prescribe a drug that could interact badly with another one the patient already uses. As these computerized charts become more sophisticated, they also have the potential to spur more efficient care: no more getting another X-ray just because you forgot to bring in your last scan if the doctor can call it up digitally.

About a third of doctors report using electronic records, double the number since 2008, says a report this month in the journal Health Affairs. Many more doctors are expected to adopt them by 2015 or face cuts in Medicare payments.

The challenge in the intimate exam room: Don't let the gadget distract from your main job, "which is helping patients with their lives," says Georgetown's WinklerPrins. He limits screen time in front of his own patients by typing notes into their charts after they leave.

Hence, the training for new doctors.

A group of actors gathered at Georgetown one recent morning, each there to play the role of an older diabetic seeking care for the first time since a spouse's death. WinklerPrins watched on a monitor outside the room as medical students conducted a 15-minute office visit. They used computerized records while giving each actor-patient test results, setting a treatment plan and sending an electronic prescription to the pharmacy.

Afterward, the "patients" offered valuable feedback. One was irritated that her would-be doctor got stuck e-prescribing and, her mind on the computer, kept repeating the same question rather than saying, "Give me a minute."

Down the hall, actor John Askew Sr. praised Shumer's bedside manner but explained the computer screen was too far away for him to see.

"If you said, 'Can you see?' I would have felt less disengaged," said Askew, from Washington's Maryland suburbs.

The students see the value of electronic health records but also how easy it is to be distracted with all the clicking and scrolling.

"When I have the computer, I may be less personable, but my notes are more thorough," Shumer, of Farmington Hills, Mich., told his professor. "It's easier to have a relationship when the computer is not there."

Hopefully, the systems will get less clunky, WinklerPrins responded: "We don't lose, in the meantime, the focus on the patient."

Total Defense PC Tune-Up

Does your computer freeze, crash, or not run as swiftly as it once did? If you answered "yes" then it's time to give your PC a shot of new life with a tune-up utility. Total Defense PC Tune-Up (from $39.99 per year) can help you do just that by repairing the registry, downloading drivers, and making other essential improvements to your system software. I saw better PC performance after using Total Defense PC Tune-Up, but the improvements fell just short of those I saw after using the current tune-up utility champ, Editors' Choice award-winning Iolo System Mechanic 10.7 ($39.99, 4.5 stars). What's more, Total Defense's three-PC license limitation pales in comparison with Iolo's unlimited installs.

Getting Started
The gray-and-white welcome screen prompts you to execute the first scan after you launch Total Defense PC Tune-Up, which will test your computer for speed, stability, and performance. Clicking "Scan" doesn't cause the app to immediately scan your PC. Instead, Total Defense PC Tune-Up launches "Scan Options" where you set the software to scan your computer's hard disks (which I recommend). You can contribute your computer's pre-scan performance to Total Defense's database by inputting information into an in-app form, but I'd rather see a system in place like that in SlimWare Utilities SlimCleaner (Free, 4.5 stars) which uses community-driven feedback to help you determine files to uninstall.

The software displays benchmark results that measure your PC's performance against other recently scanned PCs after the scan is complete. The "Results" screen lists over a dozen test reports after the scan in system scan is completed. Areas that scored well were highlighted in green text, while trouble spots were highlighted in red text. Mousing over a result opens a small balloon that explains the function and importance of each test?a nice inclusion for those who want to know how the app operates. Still, real-time system monitoring?a PC Tools Performance Toolkit ($39.95, 4 stars) feature?would've been a nice addition.

Clicking "Start Tune-Up" began the cleanup process, which consisted of defragging the disc, updating drivers, optimizing system restore points, removing junk files, applying registry fixes, and more. You can remove any of these processes by unchecking one or more options in Scan Options.

Performance Improvements
I tested Total Defense PC Tune-Up's ability to whip a PC back into shape by performing three tests?running the Geekbench system performance tool, measuring boot times, and transferring a 1.1GB folder of mixed media to external storage?before and after running the software to compare the computer's potency. Each test was run three times and averaged. Before Total Defense PC Tune-Up scrubbed the system, the 2-GHz Intel Core i7 X990 Style-Note notebook with 4GB of RAM and an 80GB Intel SSD drive achieved a 5,903 Geekbench score, booted in 50.3 seconds, and transferred the 1.1GB folder in 40.5 seconds.

After using Total Defense PC Tune-Up, the system saw improved performance: The GeekBench score rose to 5,991 (Iolo scored 6,064). The boot time decreased to 40.2 seconds (37.1 seconds with Iolo). The file transfer speed dropped to 39.8 seconds (a hair swifter than Iolo's 40.8 seconds). The overall system performance was fast and snappy?windows and menus opened quickly.

Total Defense PC Tune-Up Performance Comparison Chart

You can also schedule backups, backup and restore settings, and manage add-ons (like Download Nitro, which had an invisible effect on our download speed).

Should You Purchase Total Defense PC Tune-Up?
Total Defense PC Tune-Up is a worthy collection of solid tune-up utilities that get the job done, making it a sensible choice: It did a satisfactory job of cleaning up our testbed and increasing its overall performance. But in the age of the multi-computer household, the installation limitations are outdated; if you want to install it on more than three PCs, you'll have to buy two licenses at a cost of nearly $80. Contrast that with our Editors' Choice Award-winning Iolo System Mechanic 10, which lacks those installation limitations and gave us a better performance boost.

Beyond the Tears: A True Survivor's Story: Tolson 4 TEARS Reviews ...

Darrell Hammond has offered our society a story about pop-culture by describing his work as a comedian. He has also generously shared that which we don?t see beneath the mask of entertainer: the depths to which child abuse destroys the psyche. A writer who can tell this story of trauma, its ramifications, and recovery is generous enough to let others know that they are not alone. It is significant to solving social problems when a celebrity reveals that all that glitters is not gold; breaking the silence of child abuse is a courageous step toward awareness of the need for prevention. Mr. Hammond describes the crisis ridden life he led, which he fed with alcohol, drugs, and a constant need for intervention.

The audience of Saturday Night Live may enjoy the behind-the-scenes activity of Hammond?s career on the show. However, audiences of his award-winning acting may not have known the origin of his genius. Apparently, his voice was not heard as a child, until he noticed that his mother would often stop abusing him when he mimicked others? voices. He tells the readers how he developed this talent as a means of self-protection. Hammond writes poignantly about his father and their relationship, or lack thereof. Meanwhile, Hammond felt scared to death of the world at large. The fear shadowed him, and showered him with insecurities that led to multiple self-destructive behaviors. The pressurized public life as an entertainer and the intense private life as a trauma victim was his reality in paradox.

The writing style seems appropriate for the man and the material. There is no sensationalizing of the trauma he endured; he tells this story as it unfolds for him, in unbearable explosions of flashbacks and nightmares. Hammond is tortured, as was his cold father and cruel mother, but he does not torment the reader with unnecessary scenarios of abuse. He gives the reader enough details of the child abuse to understand his inner hell. After countless rehabs and psych wards, misdiagnosis and medications, he also gives the reader reason to hope for Hammond?s continuation in recovery and contentment in relationships.

Katy Perry Covers Rihanna, Lady Gaga in Concert

Katy Perry channeled two of her contemporaries this weekend with a cover of Rihanna's "Only Girl" and Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" in Manchester (UK).

The singer has teased an upcoming collaboration with Rihanna - though it's unclear what that will entail specifically - and paid homage to her BFF here.

Perry has been touring Europe, where she's been linked to model Baptiste Giabiconi, in the wake of her surprising divorce from zany comic Russell Brand.

Take a listen to the live Gaga-Rihanna medley below ...

Nourish Your Relationships: How Deep ... - The Daily Love

A 2010 study from the University of Arizona found an increased level of happiness in those people who spend less time participating in small talk and more time having deep, meaningful conversations.

The psychologist leading the study, Dr. Matthias Mehl, explains that meaningful conversations make people happy because we are:

-????????? Driven to create meaning in our lives.

-????????? Enjoy connecting with others.

Social conversations affect of our psychological health in the same way that our relationship to food affects our physical wellbeing.

Think of it this way: When we take the time to get to know our farmers, buy locally and make food at home, we simply eat healthier.

The most profound relationship with food comes from the experience of growing and harvesting our own food. Buying food locally and speaking with the farmers involved in its transit from their hands to our table also cultivate a relationship with food. These steps not only build a relationship with our local community and with food, but also with nature itself.

Picking up food through a drive-thru window is the equivalent of a superficial conversation. There is a disconnect from the person who makes the food, from sitting down and eating the food and from the life cycle of the food itself.

In spite of this, fast-food is a bustling business. Clearly, plenty of us have enough reason to eat quick and convenient food. The most obvious reason is a busy schedule.

Two things that we can do to enhance our relationship with food:

  1. 1.???? Handle and prepare food at home. When we cook most of our meals at home, we avoid many of the food toxins that are normally present in heavily refined and processed foods.

For example, even the Food and Drug Administration now warns us about the dangerous health effects of food dyes. At the same time, many of us still snack on processed foods that contain dyes and feed these foods to our children. Food dyes have been linked to cancer, ADD, and ADHD.

Keep in mind that eating prepared food from a box while at home is not the same as preparing food at home.

  1. 2.???? Read labels. While it is a good idea to avoid heavily processed foods, some processing is unavoidable.

For example, almost all fats and oils, ranging from high quality butter to olive oil, all go through some kind of extraction process. When we read labels, we get an idea of the degree of processing a food has gone through.

When we read food labels, we also learn if a food contains any added chemicals, preservatives, sugars or poor quality oils. If an ingredient label contains words you do not understand, put the food down and keep shopping.

When it comes to health, whether psychological or physical, relationships matter. Health tip for the day: Get lost in a meaningful conversation while preparing a meal at home!

Fitness Career Spotlight: Shelby Corkern Jacquez, Certified Personal

Finding passion in your profession is key to Shelby Corkern Jacquez?s success as a personal trainer. Read on to learn how to make a living doing what you love.

What attracted you to the field of fitness and exercise?
Someone once told me that I should not make my passion my profession? I thought about that advice for one small second and I did the opposite. I followed my heart and turned my passion into my profession.? I am happy to say that 11 professional years later, health, fitness and holistic living are the cornerstones of my vitality.
?
My attraction with fitness started at the age of 15. When I was 13, I auditioned for a competitive dance company. At 14 I received a full tuition scholarship. At 15 I nearly lost my scholarship because?I was put on a 5 lb weight probation. The weight probation was a real mind (you know what), but it turned out to be very positive experience for me. The probation sparked me to hire Mr. Jim Ptack, my very 1st personal trainer. My experience with Jim was absolutely AWESOME! So at the age of 15, I fell in love with health and fitness, and at 33 the love affair is still going strong.

How did you get your current job in fitness and exercise?
I got a lucky break from an independent gym owner named Phil Chen. Phil was the owner of APEX health and fitness. APEX was a small one on one personal training studio in San Francisco. Phil hired me to be his personal assistant. He paid me next to nothing in return I was allowed to shadow him training each and everyone of his clients. After 4 months of taking notes and paying close attention, he gave me my very 1st client. Again I was very lucky to find Phil, he gave me a very rare opportunity. Thank you Phil!

What skills were you born with and what skills have you learned along the way?
I suppose I was born with the skill of movement. I dance effortlessly, I have rhythm and hear music quite well! I was also born with a strong work ethic, Along the way I trained myself to became psychically strong. Snowboarding, running, kick boxing, swimming, biking, yoga and Pilates are all art forms in which I have learned to achieve and excel.

What advice do you have for others wanting to be just as successful and fulfilled as you?
I guess for me I would say ?make your passion your profession?.

If you could be paid for your job with something other than a paycheck, what would it be?

Web traffic is flowers and football for February

Reston, Va. ? Spurred by Valentine?s Day, millions of Americans scoured the web for flowers, gifts and greetings in February, according to new figures from comScore.

The category grew 28 percent for the month to 29.3 million visitors, led by ProFlowers.com, which spiked 394 percent to 5.4 million visitors.

Super Bowl XLVI also helped drive traffic to websites promoted by advertisers, particularly related to autos. More than 27 million people visited an auto manufacturer site, up 17 percent from January, with Toyota, Honda and General Motors leading the way.

?Valentine?s Day and the Super Bowl seemed to be the driving forces behind much of the online activity in February as Americans browsed romantic gifts and checked out Super Bowl advertisers? websites, especially auto makers,? said Jeff Hackett, executive vice president of comScore. ?In addition, tax sites posted another month of gains as the filing deadline drew nearer.?

This article was also published in New England Tech Wire.

Dr. Dre To Produce Horror Movie 'Thaw'

Dr. Dre knows beats and he's one of the best at verbally eviscerating his enemies. But now the reclusive rap icon and music mogul is getting ready to enter a whole new arena of battle: the slasher movie.

According to Variety, Dre is set to co-produce the horror thriller "Thaw" for the Crucial Films movie banner. The script for the film will be written by Vik Weet, with a story focusing on an "ancient evil that emerges from the rapidly melting ice in the Yukon."

Curiously, Variety noted that Weet has also written another script for an as-yet-untitled thriller to be directed by action veteran Renny Harlin about the investigation into the 1959 Dyatlov Pass incident, where 9 experienced hikers were found dead in Russia's Ural Mountains.

Dre is no stranger to the movie business, with a resume that includes acting appearances in the 1996 heist flick "Set It Off," as well as turns in the comedy "The Wash" and cop drama "Training Day." He announced a deal in 2007 to team with New Line Cinema's Crucial Films to produce a series of dark comedies and horror films and "Thaw" would be the first effort under that compact.

The move into movies is just one of the big deals Dre could be cooking up. According to reports, HTC, the company that bought a majority stake in his Beats By Dr. Dre brand of headphones line -- which he co-founded with Interscope boss and "American Idol" mentor Jimmy Iovine -- is in talks to acquire the popular online music service MOG.

And, of course, Dre is also still working on his long-promised Detox album. Rick Ross recently told MTV News that he had joined the likes of Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, 50 Cent and Nas as a contributor
 to the top secret project.

"We making some things happen, man -- we just gonna see where the pieces fall," Ross said. "But we most definitely putting in major work.
